Every year as we plan for our annual meetings, we have to opportunity to work with amazing archivists, historians, special collection librarians and directors of institutions in the city we are visiting. They open their doors and their archives to the members of the society in attendance. Often these wonderful people prepare special exhibits specifically geared to our members and commit a huge number of man hours to share their manuscripts and special items with us. In most cases they do this free of charge. As members of an organization dedicated to the collection and preservation of manuscripts we all know the costs involved. Each year as we visit these locations we make it our mission to give a “thank you,” a financial gift dedicated to the preservation of their manuscripts. THIS is where Angels come in. Angels make these “thank you” gifts possible. At any time during the year anyone can make a contribution to the fund which is used to thank the institutions we visit free of charge. You don’t have to attend the annual meeting to contribute. For others, an additional gift as an angel is added to the registration. These contributions are also tax-deducible. Angels make it possible for the institutions we all enjoy visiting to continue their missions. Use the button below and make a contribution now. -
The Manuscript Society supports a wide variety of projects, publications, and activities of interest to collectors, librarians, archivists and historians. Just take a moment to look around our web site. Anyone with an interest in manuscript documents or an appreciation for their role in history will find something valuable amongst our publications, our annual meeting and other gatherings and excursions, our scholarship programs, and so on. Our Society kindles the passion for autographs and manuscripts by getting members together in person to view items and to discuss their history. We learn from each other’s experience and knowledge, and we share our enthusiasm and support. Documents by themselves are indeed fascinating, but in the context of our friendships with others who similarly appreciate them, they truly do come alive. Given some thought, it quickly becomes clear that the cost of all that our Society does cannot be supported solely from membership dues. Generous supporters over the years have established the Society’s “Annual Fund,” a recurring campaign of financial support that enables the Manuscript Society to offer more meaningful experiences, deeper academic explorations, and more frequent activities every year than would otherwise be possible. Our Annual Fund recognizes support at several levels, particularly the one that is most comfortable for you. Whether you are a frequent attendee at our annual meetings, a sometime participant in local or regional activities, or someone who appreciates the information made available through our publications, there is a level of support that best recognizes the appreciation you have for our efforts. -
Editor: Edmund Berkley, Jr. Coeditors: Herbert E. Klinghofer & Kenneth W. Rendell Sponsored by The Manuscript Society and originally published in 1978, this volume continues to be a valuable resource on the history and fundamentals of autograph collecting. This work offers the collector of autographs a comprehensive manual of the history and fundamentals of autograph collecting and of the various fields and areas of specialization in which to collect. Articles range in coverage from broad concepts such as the development of writing and note on writing materials to specific topics as the legal ramifications of manuscript collecting and autographs of the American Civil War. The articles are written by contributors who have been chosen for their expertise in a certain area of collecting. This book was conceived as a basic reference book and includes articles on some of the traditional areas of collecting, such as American literary autographs and some areas that would not be as obvious, such as autographs and manuscripts of radical and reformers. The authors describe the appeal of specializations, note what material is available and suggest new approaches or new subspecialties. This book was a unique undertaking in the field and even today is an important resource for both the serious collector and the new collector. It is essential for dealers, researchers, curators, and booksellers… -
