Managing a Large Donated Collection
Presenter: Robert Hopper
Host: Gerald “Jay” Gaidmore
Over the past several years, inheriting families of member collectors/dealers have offered to donate substantial collections to benefit the Manuscript Society. When this occurs the Board of Trustees considers how workable (salable) the material is, how it supports our missions to preserve and educate, if any members wish to manage the project or if an institution, university or auction house might be best positioned to take this on. Then after deliberation, the Society can decide to accept the material via a Deed of Gift and move forward using the collection to benefit the work of the Society.
In this presentation past president and archive committee chair Robert Hopper will describe one major project that worked well, and others that were harder to manage. He will also discuss the role of the “fun auctions” at our annual meetings.
Presenter: Robert Hopper has been a member of the Manuscript Society for almost 30 years. He has served in a few capacities including both Vice President and President and is currently chairperson of the Archives Committee. Bob spent much of his career working for the U.S. Department of State.
