For everyone who has every collected books, stamps, coins and certainly manuscripts you remember the moment.  You make one purchase and find an additional surprise. So it was for in William Leslie in 2014.  With time on his hands, a visit to an old bookstore.   Then a thin paper bag caught his eye. “It was labeled “Four old school atlases, $50.” With permission, I opened it up and examined the first two items. They were indeed school atlases, dated 1817 and 1820. They were very tattered, almost limp, and they looked as if they had been well-used by a long series of students. Each contained eight or ten maps with exotic-sounding place names, like Nubia and Abyssinia. The maps of North America more or less stopped west of the Mississippi.”
