“License to Carry: Hemingway, Salinger, and the Archive of Lillian Ross”

Presenter: Sarah Funke Butler

Moderator: Gerald “Jay” Gaidmore

In a recently uncovered letter, Ernest Hemingway suggested to Lillian Ross that she get “a license to carry,” so lethal was her writing. Through an examination of a new trove of letters between them, as well as material from Ross’s archive, independent scholar Sarah Funke Butler will discuss Ross’s relationship with Hemingway, Salinger, and others; their views on Ross as a friend and writer; and the importance of her literary legacy.
