Manuscripts

Manuscripts is the quarterly journal of the Society and is currently in its 76th year of publication.   As the members of the Society represent a wide range of collecting interests, articles published in the journal tend to reflect variety too.  In the past years, the journal included an article about Thomas Jefferson’s polygraph machine and how to distinguish a polygraph copy from an original ALS, a feature article on the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection, and lengthy article about the collecting interests of John R. Block, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  While most articles are written by Society members, archivists, curators and historians occasionally provide valuable insights about manuscripts within their sphere of responsibility.

“Book Reviews” also appears on a regular basis, providing insight to publications that collectors of manuscripts would find of value.  Rounding out the journal’s content, advertisements assist members who are interested in upcoming auctions and sales while also pointing to companies that offer appraisal and preservation services.

The Manuscript Society News

Since 1980 the News has kept members informed about the Society and served as a window on the wider world of manuscripts and autographs. Highlights of the quarterly newsletter include:

  • Reports from recipients of the Society’s Maass Research Grant

In addition, the News recognizes those who have contributed to the Society, and alerts members to ways in which they can support its mission. Regular departments share reports of sales and acquisitions, thefts and forgeries, recent book releases, upcoming events, and other news of note.
