Manuscript Definition

According to the Society of American Archivists, a manuscript can be defined as follows:

  1.  a handwritten document
  2. an unpublished document
  3. (usually pl.) synonym for manuscript collection
  4. a draft of a book, article, or other work intended for publication

However, we at the Manuscript Society take a somewhat wider view. In our opinion, manuscripts can encompass all documents, whether handwritten or type written, that for historical, cultural, or artistic purposes should be preserved.
